About this object
A blue and white porcelain meat dish depicting the Rhine River. The dish belonged to a missionary in Ōpōtiki, Reverend Carl Völkner.

This dish is made of white porcelain with a blue decorative image, potentially of the Rhine River. There is a maker’s mark on the back that says ‘Palmyra W&B’.

Subject and Association Description
The meat dish is believed to be the only item, still remaining, that was removed from Völkner’s home after his murder. The dish was later returned to a member of the colonial army by Maori troops. It stayed in the family of Sgt. Samuel Austin until it was donated to the Museum.
