The handcuffs are made from wrought iron and were likely made by a blacksmith or brought to New Zealand as colonial forces came over.

Subject and Association Description
The handcuffs were found on the Orakau battle site and are believed to have been used to restrain Chief Wahanui's mother as she watched her son fight during the battle of Orakau, where he was shot in the leg.
