About this object
Mountford Tosswill Woollaston was born in Taranaki. He studied at the Canterbury School of Art and the Dunedin Technical College where he was taught by R.N. Field (1899-1987). He was knighted in 1979 for services to painting.

Woollaston was particularly influenced by the formalist theories of Cézanne (1839-1906). He produced mostly expressionist style landscapes and portraits. He painted a number of large artworks inspired by the Nelson and Greymouth landscape, regions in which he lived for a number of years. Woollaston was a pioneer of modern art.

Nice to see this work again, and to know that is with the Aigantighe - My father had a high regard for the gallery. However I think there is a mistake in the title. The subject is clearly "TASMAN Bay from Mapua", and incorporates some elements (the buildings foreground) reminiscent of earlier studies of the subject - as far back as the 1930s). As far as I know there is no 'Tarakohe Bay'. Tarakohe Harbour is in Golden Bay, not visible from Mapua.
