Self-Portrait with a Maori Kete
About this object
Susan Wilson was born in Dunedin and grew up in Southland and North Canterbury. She studied painting in London at the Royal Academy.

The depiction of family, friends and self-portraits are central to Susan Wilson’s art. She has exhibited in New Zealand and throughout Europe and lives in London. Wilson refers to New Zealand in her work and this pivotal portrait is a reflection on homesickness following her mother’s death. Here Susan clutches her mother’s kete, and her slippers (now empty) float behind her.
