About this object
This portrait is of Helen Grant (1854–1955). She and her husband Alexander (1832-1921) were born in Scotland and they built Aigantighe as a retirement home in 1908. Helen lived there until her death at age 101. Helen was a Scottish philanthropist, art collector and founder of Aigantighe as an art museum.

This painting was given to the Aigantighe in 1998 by Hester Wigley, Helen Grant’s granddaughter.

Archibald Nicoll was born in Lincoln and studied at the Canterbury College School of Art in Christchurch. In 1911 he studied art in London and Edinburgh. In 1918 Nicoll began teaching art at the Wellington Technical College and he also started a portrait studio. Nicoll would paint over 100 society portraits including this one.
