The Unemployed
About this object
William Greene came to New Zealand with his family from Australia and in 1894 established a studio in Bank Street, Timaru. After trips to Australia and England for training he taught art at Timaru High School. He was a founder member of the South Canterbury Art Society and painted many scenes of life in and around Timaru. In 1921 he took up a position at the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College.

The Unemployed was exhibited at one of the South Canterbury Art Society exhibitions. These donkeys which children would ride, were a common sight on Caroline Bay during the summer months earlier in the Twentieth Century. Such was their fame that their names have been recorded. From left to right they are Snowball, Sambo, Emma and Matilda.
