Recently saw a fabulous collection of these at the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes, Yorkshire Dales, UK and found out that they were often given as love tokens, with inscriptions like this one. Their current temporary exhibition "Let No Loop Down" by contemporary textile artist Ruth Lee, draws from studies of knitting sheaths and knitting in the museum's collections:
