About this object
Mineral and rock specimens collection; a boxed collection of mineral and rock specimens. The box has a lifting lid, three lift-out specimen trays, and a sliding specimen tray in the base of the box. The catalogue is bound in red and fits into the lid. The catalogue lists 207 items. The first and second trays contains 44 paper specimen boxes each, the third tray contains 47 paper specimen boxes. The pull-out tray at the bottom has 29 paper boxes.

This collection of mineral and rock specimens belonged to Gerald Thomas, an entomologist who also had an interest in fossils and stone tools. Thomas purchased the collection at an auction in the United Kingdom and it was one of the items he and his wife, Ann, brought with them when they moved to New Zealand. Thomas may have added to the original collection, as some specimens are written on, while others are numbered, and some do not appear on the accompanying catalogue [XTS.3855.2]. The collection originally belonged to James Tennant, a well-known English mineralogist. Tennant was Professor of Mineralogy at King's College in London and mineralogist to Queen Victoria.
