About this object
Document, 'Thames School of Mines Rules and Regulations', written by Albert Bruce, Secretary; framed in a moulded wooden frame.

The Thames School of Mines, which opened on the present site in 1886, was one of about 30 schools founded nationally to stimulate growth in the goldfields with the active encouragement of William Larnach (1833-1898), Minister of Mines in the Stout-Vogel administration. Gold extraction was an important part of the economy in nineteenth-century New Zealand. The Thames School of Mines was in operation through until 1954. Albert Bruce was secretary for 38 years, from 1885 to 1923.
