About this object
Native copper; a piece of native copper, showing the dentritic pattern often found in 'native' metals.

A 'native' metal is one which is naturally occurring in pure uncombined form. Before the invention of smelting techniques to extract metals from their ores, native metals were man’s only access to metal. This specimen is from the Ray Mine Superior, Arizona. In North America native copper was used to make tools and ornaments before the arrival of Europeans.
