About this object
Kaolin; a piece of kaolin.

Kaolin, also called China clay, is a soft white clay used in the manufacture of ceramics (it is the main ingredient in porcelain). It is also widely used in the making of paper, paint, and many other products, including medicines and cosmetics. Kaolin is named after the Kao-ling mountain in Jiangxi province, China, from which it was originally mined. This particular specimen is inscribed ‘Clay from Hyde Otago found adjacent to auriferous ground’, auriferous meaning gold bearing.
