Name/Title
Stamper battery model
About this object
Stamper battery model; an instructional model of a stamper battery. Includes the main stamper structure, the Pelton wheel, the ore run or guttering, the amalgam plates, a berdan and the wheel pulley.

This model of a stamper battery was made for Thames School of Mines in 1904. A stamper battery was used in hard rock mining to crush the gold bearing ore into powder to recover the gold. This relatively simple process produced an average recovery rate of just over 50% in the Thames gold field. This low recovery rate was one of the factors that led to the establishment of the Thames School of Mines.
