About this object
Scrimshaw horn; a horn engraved with 'Prince Albert, Prince Consort at time of his death' [1861], with a profile image of Prince Albert, below which is an image of a sailing ship, captioned 'PRINCE ALBERT'.

Scrimshaw refers to the art of carving images into bone. This was commonly practised by sailors with extra time on their hands, who would carve nautical images into the teeth and bones of whales. This particular example is carved into a horn.
