About this object
Diary [The Royal Pocket Book, 1862, Patty and Allan Kerr Taylor]; a small leather bound diary with yellow front pages. The contents include printed pages for diary entries and daily expenses, including the purchase of the book 'The Emigrant's Daughter' by John Renshaw. The title page is printed in red and the frontispiece bears an illustration titled 'The Consultant', which shows two women in conversation. Daily diary entries have been made in pencil.

Little is known about Allan Kerr Taylor's first wife Patty. Apart from a few books and photographs which remain at Alberton there is not much which survives to give us an insight into her character. This pocketbook, which seems to have been given to Allan by Patty on the 14th April 1862, dates to just before she immigrated to New Zealand. It contains notes in both their hands, listing items likely required for the journey, such as: knives, forks, and spoons; sheets, towels, and pillowslips; a water filter and a spirit lamp; and nail brushes, a sponge, a clothes bag and Seidlitz powders (a patent medicine). It also lists expenses, for example dinners at 1/5d to 1/11d, haircuts at 3d, and a marriage licence for 45/-. The two were married on 3rd June 1862 at St. Peter's Church, Worfield.
