About this object
This hardbound book was awarded to Adeline Violet Kerr Taylor for ‘1st Prize - 3rd class’ at St. Luke’s Sunday school in 1883.

The Kerr Taylor family were devout Anglicans and attended both morning and evening services at St. Luke’s church in Mount Albert, Auckland, every Sunday. All of the Kerr Taylor children attended Sunday school where their mother, Sophia, taught for 46 years. Adeline’s older sisters, Winifred and Mildred, also taught Sunday school when their mother retired in 1920. (1)

Books, like this one, were an important part of Victorian life in an era where there was no television, computers, or radio. Books were a vital source of entertainment, and an illustrated book, such as ‘Chats about Animals and Birds’ would have provided hours of entertainment for nine-year-old Adeline.
