About this object
This black and white carte de viste pictures Mildred Kerr Taylor as a young girl. Mildred, sometimes referred to as Milly when she was a girl, is shown seated with her elbows on the table and her hands clasped under her chin. She is wearing a heavy Victorian gown made from dark fabric, and her long hair has been drawn away from her face and tied in a bow.

Mildred was born on 4 March 1869, and was the daughter of Allen and Sophia Kerr Taylor. She lived at Alberton in Mount Albert, Auckland, with her three sisters, Winifred, Adeline Violet, and Muriel, and her three brothers, Vincent, Theodore, and Lancelot.

As a girl, Mildred attended a small private primary school in Morningside which consisted of 10 pupils. She later went on to attend Auckland Girls Grammar High School.

Every Sunday, Mildred and her family attended services at St. Luke’s Church in Mount Albert, as well as Sunday school which was instructed by her mother, Sophia. Quite often, St. Luke’s held socials or “soirees”, and fundraising concerts, in which Mildred, her sisters, and their mother would perform. (1)
