About this object
Silk souvenir programme presented by The West’s Picture Proprietary and The Royal Picture Syndicate to commemorate the opening of their new Picture Palace, the Kings Theatre, Wellington, on the 16th March, 1910. The Kings Theatre was the first purpose-built cinema in New Zealand. This rare and unique programme provides the researcher with clues to the types of short motion pictures made available to New Zealand audiences in 1910. One side depicts a head and shoulder sketch of a woman, eyes raised towards the sky, beneath her text attributed to Tennyson reads “Her Eyes are Homes of Silent Prayer”. The evening’s programme of short films are listed on the back, and include the titles ‘The Fallen Idol’, ‘Trip to the North Pole’, ‘Two Kids on a Spree in Brussells’, ‘Adventures of a Smoker’ and ‘The Lady Detective’.
