About this object
This wooden dining chair was used to seat people when they were getting their photograph taken and can be seen in some historic photographs from Riverton.

Photography was revolutionary in people's lives from the 1860s onward because it enabled a much wider range of people to have images of themselves and their loved ones. Previously such things were a luxury of those who could afford to pay an artist to paint them, as well as having an income that allowed the person to spend many hours sitting or standing for the artist's reference.
