About this object
Mills bombs were a series of hand grenades adopted by the British Army as their standard issue hand bomb from 1915-1972. This particular model was specially designed and waterproofed with shellac for use in the hot climate of Mesopotamia, and was still used in combat as recently as 2004. To use the grenade the thrower first removed the safety pin while holding down the strike lever beneath it. Once the bomb was thrown the strike lever ejected which set off the fuse.
