About this object
The view of Dunedin in this watercolour by Wilbraham Frederick Evelyn Liardet (1799-1878) extends from Vauxhall on the left to Andersons Bay and what is now St. Kilda beach on the right. The Vauxhall Gardens, with its rotunda, can be seen on the hill on the left. The large building in Andersons Bay is probably the Andersons Bay Hotel owned by William Hildreth. W.F.E. Liardet was a descendant of the famous English diarist John Evelyn. He was born in London. In 1839, after a career in the navy and the army, he and his large family sailed for Australia. From the 1860s he also spent some time in New Zealand.
