About this object
Since their humble beginnings in Wanganui in 1877, Whitlock’s sauces and chutneys have become an institution in many New Zealand homes. This family business, established by Fred Whitlock in 1877, was one of the oldest and longest running businesses in Wanganui. The factory was located in London Street and manufactured a wide range of cordials, sauces, pickles, chutneys and baking goods. These award winning jars were imported from Europe for the Whitlock’s display at the 1885 Industrial Exhibition in Wellington. Although acquired by Cerebos in 1992 and no longer family owned, the Whitlock’s brand is well known all over New Zealand and is recognised as a genuine kiwi icon.

It is not the velvet covering but the soft inner tissue that is prized by Asians for its health-giving properties. This display in Taipei shows sliced velvet in jars with a whole deer antler.

After the 1947 Gisborne tsunami, June Young (née McLauchlan) found two piper fish stranded when the sea retreated. The fish were unknown in nearby waters. June was living with her family at the Tatapōuri hotel, north of the city, which was swamped by the giant wave. Her father had the fish preserved, and they were displayed for many years in a large jar in the public bar. She still vividly remembers the flooding of the hotel and the devastation caused by the wave.
