About this object
This large shark's tooth has been identified as belonging to a a type of prehistoric shark, a giant marine predator, the Procarcharodon megalodon.
This species lived about 30-40 million years ago. It was related to the ancestors of the great white shark that roam our oceans today, but was many times larger. Whales were its main prey. This tooth was found 79km inland from the Whanganui River mouth at Pipiriki.
