About this object
Chair carved by Putiki Maori and presented to Reverend Richard Taylor as a personal gift about 1844. This extraordinary missionary served in Wanganui from 1843 to 1873. He was dedicated to his mission, a prolific writer, collector, arbitrator between Mäori and European, naturalist and advisor to governors. His collection includes this carved chair made for him by members of his congregation, a taiaha described in 1843 as his staff and support, a collection of rare godsticks from this region, exquisite kaitaka paepaeroa or prestige cloaks, and a rare potae taua or mourning cap.
