About this object
Edith Rhodes carved this mantelpiece in 1905. It is stained with a dark varnish and ornately carved in a high-relief style showing stylised trees and flowers. Edith lived at Matainui, a homestead near Rata on the Rangitikei River with her husband Clive and her four children. She had a special shed where she would carve. The mantelpiece was gifted to the Museum by Edith’s son Alton when the house was demolished in the 1960s.
Woodcarving was one of the most popular Arts and Craft techniques practiced by women in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In Wanganui classes were held in the afternoon, in the evenings and on Saturdays by 1902. Some women carved their own designs while others based their carving on patterns copied from magazines. You could even buy pre-patterned boards.
