About this object
A prominent memorial in Queen Street, Waimate is that of Dr Margaret Cruickshank, M.D., who died during the 1918 influenza. Dr Cruickshank was the first woman doctor to practise in New Zealand, and served in Waimate from 1896 to 1918. The unveiling took place on January 25, 1923. The Chairman of the Hospital Committee (Mr T.L. Hart) made the opening remarks, followed by Mr J. Bitchiner, M.P., representing the Government and the Minister of Health, and then followed by Dr Siedeberg, representing the New Zealand Medical Women's Association; Hon. E.H Clark, representing Palmerston friends; Mr C.E. Bremner, representing old Waimate friends. Mrs Barclay unveiled the memorial and the Band played 'Garland of Flowers" and "God Save the King". The Clock Room at the Waimate Museum displays the gold pocket watch presented to Dr Margaret Cruickshank by 'her many Waimate friends' on the eve of her departure overseas on the 13 Feb 1913.
