This thesis investigates the potential and capability of the qNano instrument, a nanoparticle analysis research instrument developed by IZON Science Ltd. The qNano operates on the basis of the Scanning Ion Occlusion Spectroscopy (SIOS) technology which is similar to the Coulter technique also known as resistive pulse sensing. This coupled with an adjustable nanopore and IZON’s recently developed Variable Pressure Module (VPM) makes qNano a versatile nanoparticle analysis apparatus. In this study the potential of the instrument to detect inorganic and metal nanoparticles is explored. Polystyrene, silica, gold, silver, and magnetic nanoparticles have been used in this research to better understand the system and its components and to discover the capacity of the instrument to detect these particles. Using polystyrene nanoparticles, it was found that the adjustable nanopore exhibit membrane softening and follows the Mullins effect. Each of the apertures also possesses a characteristic window of operation, which refers to a range of stretch setting for accurate particle detection. The adjustable nanopore also allows for sizing particles with different diameters. The effect of surface functionality in the signal output was also investigated. Gold nanoparticles were synthesized via the citrate reduction method and the study of gold nanoparticles suspended in IZON’s standard buffer solution was looked into in depth. It was found that the gold nanoparticles aggregate in the buffer solution due to the presence of potassium chloride (KCl) salt which screens the electrostatic stabilization provided by the citrate ions. Silver nanoparticles show similar aggregation. With the concentration of gold and KCl remaining constant, resistive pulses caused by gold aggregates were detected after a period of three hours. “A vanishing art” is how David Lewis characterised the traditional, Pacific Island practice of non-instrument navigation in his classic study, We, the Navigators. Actually, the systematic, non-instrument observation of stars, wind and swells in long-distance navigation has long been extinct in the main centres of the Pacific, particularly in Polynesia. Even in that last stronghold of this ancient art, the tiny and remote atolls of the Caroline Islands of Micronesia, traditional navigation is under pressure. More and more Carolinians are travelling by ship and even aeroplane instead of sailing in their own canoes, and fewer and fewer youths are willing (or able—given the demands of the modern schooling system) to undertake the many years of patient apprenticeship needed to learn how to guide a canoe from island to island without compass, chart, sextant or any other modern aids. In recent years, however, appreciation of traditional navigation has been growing—first among students of Pacific prehistory and maritime technology, and more recently among Pacific Islanders who have lately developed an intense interest in their maritime heritage. It is in the voyages of Hōkūle'a, a reconstruction of a Polynesian voyaging canoe, that these two groups have come together to study and re-learn this vanishing art. In 1976 Mau Piailug, a master navigator from Satawal Island in the Carolines, guided Hōkūle'a from Hawaii to Tahiti, a feat which demonstrated how traditional methods can be used effectively to navigate over not just hundreds but thousands of miles of open ocean (Lewis 1977; Finney 1979). Then, in 1980, Mau's Hawaiian pupil, Nainoa Thompson, employed non-instrument methods to navigate the canoe from Hawaii to Tahiti and return. The interest of jurists in legal systems other than their own has been a matter of long tradition. All legal systems have the same purpose of regulating and harmonizing the human activity within their respective societies, and in each society the legal system forms part of the culture and civilization as well as of the history and the life of its people. Many legal problems are conceptually the same wherever they arise. Jurists from different systems confront the same problems. Sometimes codes and case law give the same answer, sometimes those answers are different; if this was the case, I wanted to explore whether some answers were better than others. It would certainly not be accurate to say that there has been no approximation between the civil law and the common law traditions. Arguments that these two systems are drawing progressively closer can be heard more and more often. In spite of having started from opposite extremes, it is said that as a result of the movements the civil law and the common law have made in the direction of the other, there is no longer much difference between them. The same social needs, and similar economic and technical conditions, have led to the adoption of similar solutions for their legal problems. However, even admitting as a fact that the results might be close to each other, the methods used to reach them are nevertheless extremely divergent. After all, the ‘idioms of legal thought’ and the guiding habits of mind are different. A civilian naturally reasons from principles to instances, the common lawyer from instances to principles.
