About this object
Not just any stick of tobacco. This tobacco was dried using the Burley method: The plants were cut off at ground level, slipped onto sticks and air dried. Once dry the leaves were picked from the plant then tied onto sticks. There were only two leaves in a hank and about 30 hanks per stick. These were then hung in a shed to dry and were protected from the sun to avoid bleaching. Air circulation was a key factor in the drying process. The colour of the leaf was a darkish brown, not golden as in kiln dried
