About this object
Fossil cat's eye or operculum. It is the hard cover that blocks off the opening of a sea snail's shell to protect it from predators. It was collected from Church Bay on Waiheke Island, near Auckland, North Island, New Zealand and is of Early Miocene age (22-19 million years old). The snail it came from was the size and shape of a large grapefruit, about 20 cm in diameter.
