Name/Title
Cypraea (Notadusta) sp. A fossil cowry shell
About this object
A well preserved fossil cowry from the Late Miocene (6.5-5 million years old). Cowries are warm water inhabitants and are only found in the far north of New Zealand (Poor Knights Islands) today. It was dug from soft rocks forming the shore platform between Te Araroa and East Cape, North Island, New Zealand. The presence of such fossils indicates the Miocene climate of New Zealand was considerably warmer than today.
