About this object
This image is a self portrait of the artist, noticeably tightly cropped as if a camera has zoomed in upon his face. While Kelcy Taratoa has often included an image of himself within his painted compositions, up until now he was generally not the central focus but instead a part of the story. He says of this “I have been stripping away content visible in earlier works. Recent works display a gravitation toward compositional frameworks reminiscent of cinematic and televised imagery. The works are close-up, dramatically cropped, facilitating a type of intimacy through proximity. What I am attempting to create between the viewer and the subject is a feeling of the viewer being suspended with the subject in a state of isolation." Artist statment in Conversations Identity. Subject and Association Description
In his work, Taratoa explores links between popular culture and identity construction and that how we see ourselves or what we become might be affected by more than we think. In looking at identity he has researched the self portrait and says of this "Historically, self-portraits were accepted as a window into the artist's world. A tool or medium in which to explore themselves with uninhibited honesty; an opportunity to paint what is reflected in the mirror…Whether I consciously attempt to represent my reality or not, we must remember what we see is inevitably contrived. My process is where the deception lied. It could be said that an artist’s self-depiction shifts constantly from revealing all, to revealing nothing simultaneously. So I ask, is the self portrait real of fiction? " Kelcy Taratoa in "Conersations Identity"exhibition catalogue pg 15.
