About this object
In the 1950’s Gordon Walters started to experiment with the customary Māori koru (as can be seen here) which he became most well known for. Here the motif is repeated in a stylised manner creating a flat and pristine surface, playing with positive and negative elements. From a customary perspective, the koru has deep meaning in Māori culture, used to express ideas of new life and whakapapa (genealogy) in whakairo (carving) and places like wharenui (meeting houses). Walters was however more interested in this design purely from an aesthetic perspective, investigating aspects such as balance, shape and colour.
