Subject and Association Description
Shane Cotton is of Ngati Rangi, Ngati Hine, Te Uri Taniwha and also Pakiha descent. He went to the Illam School of Fine Arts and has also taught at Massey University in the Bachelor of Maori Visual Arts offered there. His work explores aspects of his bicultural heritage, as Cotton utilises an amalgamation of Maori and European iconography. In 1998 he was the recipient of the prestigious Frances Hodgkins fellowship offered by Otago University.
