About this object
Mounted specimen of a female huia - Heteralocha acutirostris.
Subject and Association Description
One of a pair of huia, (one male, one female) .Sources reveal they probably from came from the collection of the Palmerston North Philosophical Society, which operated a museum from 1906 - 1929.The huia is now presumed to be extinct, since c. 1907. They were restricted to the North Island, and in European times, to ranges in the lower North Island. The huia were part of the wattlebirds family, which also includes the saddleback and kokako. They were forest-dwellers, feeding on insects and fruit (Falla et al.)
