About this object
Protest Vessel was made as an entry for the Norsewear Art Award of 2003 to protest at the new awards offered that year. The amount of the award offered to the winner in the ‘fine art’ category was double that awarded to the ‘applied art’ winner. This was supposed to attract a higher quality of paintings than had previously been submitted. In comparison, the quality of three dimensional art, previously categorized as ‘craft’, had always been high. I asked Catherine Griffiths if she would be interested in helping with the design of the wording so that it could be ‘applied’ around the vessel. The form of the vessel was one of a series I was working on at the time. The applied pattern and impressed design were given to me by two ceramic artists whom I had met at an international collaboration in Hawaii the year before. "The following year, the award for each of the categories was made equal. Interestingly the judges deemed the standard in the fine art category not worthy of a premier award, and my entry shared the prize money with another ceramic work by Bronwyn Cornish and Denys Watkins." - Raewyn Atkinson, 2007
