About this object
In these works, jeweller Sophia Tekela-Smith mimics the decorative Black African heads that were fashionable in the 1950s and 60s. Whereas these heads were anonymous exotic ‘types’ for Western consumption, Tekela-Smith’s has personalised them. Her heads are portraits of friends and family. The necklaces to relate to the person depicted.
