About this object
Based in the Wairarapa, Harry Watson frequently combines his cabinetry and carving skills. Over the last decade Harry Watson has drawn subject matter from New Zealand’s colonial past, particularly from 19th century paintings and drawings. The Red Band is an interpretation of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. The characters featured are Governor William Hobson and Henry Williams, a missionary and translator, accompanied by a colonial army of magpies. The takahe and huia symbolise Maori chiefs.
