About this object
This peaked black cap, with a khaki ribbon around the base, belonged to Captain Enoch Olsen. He was the captain of the SS Kawau, SS Daphne and SS Energy from 1904 to the mid 1920's. These coastal ships played a significant role in the transport of local goods to the markets of Auckland and further a field. Mangawhai was on the list of ports to call. In very good condition.
Enoch Olsen came to New Zealand from Norway in 1877, aged 16, on the ship "Fernglen". He married Hermione Woodcock in 1882 and they had six children. He initially became a farmer then in 1904 he was registered as a ship's master. He served the Mangawai area from 1904 to the 1920's. He died in 1939 aged 78.
