About this object
Two orange Carnival Glass bowls similar shape to a basket that has no handle. Used to hold toothpicks or matches.

From Carnival Glass Collection of Marion Edith Wallis (Nee Williams)of Maungaturoto. Collected from 1967 although some pieces belonged to her family.

Carnival Glass is moulded or pressed glass always with a pattern which has a shiny,
metallic, 'iridescent' surface shimmer. Bought by the housewife in 1920's to brighten the home at a time when only the well off could afford electric lighting. Its current name was adopted by collectors in the 1920's as it was sometimes given as prizes at carnivals, fetes and fairgrounds.
