Boat, flat-bottomed
About this object
Flat-bottomed boat; also known as a 'flattie', this is typical of many boats used on the rivers of the Catlins. The wooden boat has a tapered bow and square stern. The exterior is painted white and the interior maroon. Boats such as this were used for recreation, laying set nets, or for transit, as between the Old Mill Road andthe Big Mill at Hinahina, or to cross the Tahakopa River before bridges were constructed in the 1870s.

This boat was owned by Mr George Craigie, and was used for fishing from the boat harbour at False Island for many years.
