About this object
This butter paper wrapper is printed with the trade mark for Owaka Canoe Brand butter. Dairy farming seemed at first the only possible way of making a profit out of farming. Cream was made into butter on individual farms. Then in the 1890s, small milk skimming or butter and cheese factories were founded.

On 1st January 1923, the Owaka Co-Operative Dairy opened. It was a modern factory that served a wider area. The factory began receiving cream and producing pure cream butter marketed with its distinctive label.
