About this object
When he was a small boy of six or seven years in age, the donor watched his sister use this centrifuge on the kitchen table. In the 1920s new ideas were introduced to increase farming production, including herd testing which began in 1926. It cost money for a farmer to test the butter fat levels in their milk at the Owaka Butter Factory so the donor’s father bought his own herd testing equipment. When the centrifuge was full of test tubes of milk and properly balanced, the handle was turned to a particular time on the clock. Once the cows were milked and the milk was sent to the factory, the dairy farmer had a good idea of his own production levels and an idea of what the monetary earnings would be.
