About this object
Regent Theatre Whangarei "Chums' Club" card for members of this local theatre club. It is a small cream card with the Chums' Club code of conduct on it in black writing with an outer border.

Chums' Club was a club run by the Regent Theatre in the 1940's, for special screenings or films for children, mostly westerns. Popular ones included such actors as Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. Comedies starring Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello and others were also screened around this time.

Chums' Club films were shown at 10am on Saturday mornings, cost of admission being sixpence for downstairs and ninepence in the dress circle area upstairs. The first few patrons in the queue were admitted free and these were mostly boys determined to be there early enough to get this advantage. On the birthday of members, they were summoned up to the stage and given a large block of chocolate as a treat as in those days chocolate was rather scarce.

The Regent Theatre was opened on 25 July 1930 to a packed crowd, but regrettably closed its doors for the last time in 1991.
