The memorial was unveiled on April 29th 1922 by the Governor-General, Viscount Jellicoe. A civic reception and dinner was held to honour this visit of Viscount and Lady Jellicoe. Harbour View Hotel in the rear of the photograph.

What is also important about this picture is that this is when the phoenix palms that tower over Bow street today were first planted. The story ive been told is that in preparation for the GG's visit it was decided to decorate the middle of the road with some trees. You can see the palm in the picture isnt planted. Apparently the GG commented that he liked the trees, therefore it was decided to make them pernament. They were planted by Eric Petchell when he was a boy. Eric was my grandfathers brother, the two of them ran the 4 square for many years.
