About this object
The rifle is (or was) a Lee Enfield Mk 1 'Long tom' originally made by the British for the Anglo Boer War. The E13 on the butt strap indicates that it was one of the 20,000 purchased 2nd hand by NZ in 1913-14. It would have been used for training in NZ during WWI. In the 1920's and 30's most of these rifles were sold off by the Government to shooters and hunters. Many were then 'sporterised' by having the forward part of the woodwork cut off, some had the barrel shortened.
