About this object
Around 1862 Thomas Mitchell and 2 others purchased land called 'Rangi Tahi' at the Opotoru River. These 3 gentlemen were instrumental in the flax industry which put Raglan on the map in 1865 when J. Dougal invented the flax stripper. Mitchell and Duncan damned the spring that supplied Raglan, and installed an 8 foot water-wheel which successfully powered the first flax mill. Within a few years flax mills were built where ever suitable streams flowed handy to fields of flax. At this time flax covered most of Wainui, so the first mill was in the midst of abundant raw material.
