About this object
This thermometer belonged to William James Smith, who in 1899 was at the forefront of the butter industry in Raglan. He built and operated the first factory in Te Mata, later opening another in Raglan township and a creamery at nearby Kauroa in 1902. He then sold the Te Mata factory for 600 pounds in 1903.
In time, the landmark Raglan Dairy Co-Op building was built in 1915 and all operations moved there eventually closing in 1939 with the amalgamation of the local dairy industry to Frankton, Hamilton.
