Name/Title
Side hafted adze
About this object
This rare side-hafted adze is part of a large collection of Māori taonga (treasures) known as the Willetts' collection. This type of adze is thought to have been used to hollow out the steep inside walls of waka (seagoing canoes). This collection was found at the Waitaki River Mouth by members of the Willetts' family in the early 1950s. The adze and other taoka in the collection are believed to date to the 14th century and are attributed to the Waitaha iwi (tribe). Image not to be reproduced without the permission of the North Otago Museum and Waitaha Taiwhenua o Waitaki Trust Board Inc.
