About this object
This pounamu toki (greenstone adze) is part of a large collection of Māori taonga (treasures) known as the Willetts’ collection. This collection was found at the Waitaki River Mouth in the early 1950s by the Willetts’ family. The toki and the other taonga in the collection are believed to date to the 14th century and are attributed to the Waitaha iwi (tribe). The toki is in the process of being sawn to make a smaller tool. Image not to be reproduced without the permission of the North Otago Museum and Waitaha Taiwhenua o Waitaki Trust Board Inc.
