Wangapeka Valley
About this object
A watercolour landscape of Wangapeka Valley as seen from Tadmor Hill. The ranges in the background include Old Sow and Mount Jones. The composition is in the classic 'Claudian' style with bordering trees on each side and a winding fenced path leading to a cluster of buildings located at centre on the left side. The row of trees behind the buildings may be plantings along the edge of the Sherry River. A team of horses in the foreground at centre are pulling a felled tree log on a dray and set the expansive scale of the landscape.

Subject and Association Description
The Wangapeka Valley is in the Tasman district, south-west of Nelson. The Wangapeka River flows down to converge with the Motueka River and out to Tasman Bay.

Gold was discovered in the Wangapeka Valley in 1859, which started a rush in the area. The Wangapeka Track was cut by John Rochfort to open the area to gold prospectors. The track runs from Rolling River in the Wangapeka Valley, where a gold mining township sprung up in the 1869, across the Matiri and Arthur Ranges before descending the Little Wanganui valley to the West Coast.
