About this object
Portrait of Ngati Mutunga chieftainess, Huria Matenga, wearing a korowai (cloak), hei tiki (neck pendant) and clutching huia feathers. The subject is set against a stormy marinescape with the wreck of the ship 'Delaware' in the background. The 'Delaware' floundered on rocks at Wakapuaka near Nelson on 3 September 1863 and Huria Matenga played an important role in the rescue of the ship's crew.

Subject and Association Description
This portrait of Huria Matenga was commissioned by the people of Nelson after her death in 1908. Matenga played a significant role in the rescue of sailors aboard the shipwrecked 'Delaware' in 1863 and was later recognised as a leading figure in civic life in Nelson. The artist made the portrait based on photographs of the subject and was one of three portraits of Huria Matenga completed by this artist.
